The purchase of an antique acetylene coach lamp from a French vintage shop has added to my eclectic assortment of paraphernalia and proved to be an interesting part of Australian lighting history. The coach lamp (luminaire) was made in Germany by Hermann Riemann Chemnitz Gablenz 'exclusively for' Brandt Bros Melbourne and Sydney. Acetylene is a gas originally discovered by accident in 1836 by Edmund Davy and subsequently rediscovered in 1860 by French chemist Marcellin Berthelot. It has been used extensively in lighting since the late 19th century. The reaction (Figure 2) of calcium carbide (CaC_2) with water produces acetylene (C_2H_2) and calcium hydroxide (CaOH_2); a more practical process discovered by Friedrich Wohler in 1862. Acetylene was used as the energy source for many mobile lighting applications as it was considered more stable in windy conditions than candle, colza oil, kerosene or whale oil lamps and preceded the invention of batteries and electric lighting.
