There was a time not so long ago when nothing quite said "Welcome to Belgium" like the sight of a 1960s-built Class 51, or the externally similar Classes 52-54. Whichever port or border crossing you used, these "Maids of all work" would be there to greet you! Here we see (clockwise from top left) 5114 with an evening commuter train to De Panne in September 1990, 5134 at Oostende with a train for Brussels via Kortrijk on 10th March 1985 (complete with functioning steam heating apparatus), 5173 in the older livery, also in the windswept station at Oostende on the same date, and finally 5181 alongside 8247 on Antwerpen Dam depot in September 1990. Several members of the class have been preserved in Belgium, although none of the examples pictured here. 8247 is still based at Antwerpen twenty years later, although now wokring out of the modern facility at Antwerpen Noord...
