Of all the upgrades you could consider for your Mac, perhaps the most cost-effective has to be adding extra memory. In fact, we'd say that supplementing factory fitted RAM in most Macs has performance benefits that far outstrip the outlay involved. As with hard drives, the type of RAM used in Macs has changed over the years, as Apple has adopted newer, generally faster, industry standards for components. If you have too little physical RAM on your Mac, it will allocate a larger portion of the hard disk to virtual memory. The use of a certain amount of virtual memory is perfectly normal, but using too much can make your Mac less efficient if, for instance, you're simultaneously doing some heavyweight work in Photoshop, which uses free space on the hard disk temporarily.
