摘要

Scouring of cotton fabrics aims at removal of oils and wax, pectin, protein, ash, systematically employing alkaline bath or certain enzymes like pectinase or combination of pectinase with cellulose or lipase. Though complete removal of the natural impurities from cotton is expected at the end of the scouring process, variations in the efficiency are observed on account of difficulty in accessing these impurities in primary and secondary walls of the fibres. Any further attempts to remove them completely might cause severe damage to the fibres and the quality of the fabrics processed. Various methods of assessing the process efficiency in terms of quality of the treated samples or fabrics are presented in this paper. This paper discusses various physical methods used to characterise the scoured samples and assess the quality of the fabrics.
