In order to help shoppers better identify and differentiate the genuine Banarasi silk items, including the world-famous Banarasi silk sarees, from the fake ones, the Silk Mark Organization of India (SMOI) has introduced a high security nano-particle-embedded fusion label as a mark of purity. The new-label, launched with sponsorship from the Central Silk Board, differs from the existing labels in the sense that it is fused with the fabric with the help of a hot press machine. According to SMOI, the technique makes the label indelible even after as many as 15 washes. Besides, it also has particles that are visible under infrared light. Customers could verify genuineness of their Banarasi silk items by getting them checked through a machine at a shop vending the same. The genuineness of the silk items can also be checked by texting the five-digit computer generated code, embedded on the label, to a particular phone number. The SMOI would respond to the message by sending information regarding the producer and the authorised seller, which would enable the customer to authenticate the silk. SMOI would soon announce the phone number that can be used by shoppers to authenticate the silk they are buying. SMOI expects its new initiative would prevent cheaters from passing on sub-standard Chinese silk and synthetic material with fake labels as Banarasi Silk.
