Termination and layoff are distinctive in their meaning and have been used in different circumstances although the purpose of both termination and layoff are ending the employment period. While termination is used when the cause of dismissal deals directly with the employee performance and action, layoff is used when the cause of dismissal deals with the changing company structure-or lack of work. Understanding the difference and handling both termination and layoff issues properly will prevent companies from any lawsuits, develop the clear communication and improve the overall productivity from their employees.
