Although it is virtually impossible to completely eliminate workplace violence, by taking preventive measures it can be significantly reduced. Firms should know the possible causes like labour management dispute, stress, etc., and try to reduce those as much as possible. Firms should hold training programmes for managers and supervisors, which would help them, identify potentially violent employees. Managers and supervisors should be able to read all the warning signs, which could lead an employee to an unexpected violent activity. There should be written policies about acts of violence and companies should have a zero tolerance against violence and guns at the workplace. There should be written policies describing in detail the security measures, such as locked entrances, visitor's tags, etc. Human Resources should screen well the prospective employees within the legal guidelines as described by EEOC. All these measures could significantly reduce acts of violence. Even after taking all these measures, if the mishap still happens, there should be written policies about how it should be handled in the most effective manner.
