According to the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories in the US, the technology sector contains some of the most energyintensive facilities around. Yet many of them lag behind ordinary business buildings in terms of their energy efficiency. And a lot of that comes down to their use of computer hardware. It is hard to find a decent-sized company in engineering that does not have a large data centre to deal with all the computer processing it needs. And these data centres are fast becoming the biggest consumers of energy per square metre in any area of business.
