The authors regret that a mathematical error was made in the article above in calculating the Mississippi River's flux of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the Gulf of Mexico. This mistake affects Table 5, Section 3.5.3, and one of the overall conclusions in the original article.The correct fluvial flux of PAHs into the Gulf of Mexico should be (1.3±0.54)× 10~3, (2.2±0.35)× 10~3, and (3.5±0.54)×10~3 kg for anthracene, benzo[a] anthracene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene, respectively (see revised Table 5 below). This revised magnitude of the flux was incorrectly cited in the original manuscript. The revised mass balance calculations based on the correct magnitude of river PAH flux suggest that the influx of PAHs from coastal erosion and fluvial input are each on the order of magnitude: 10~3 kg, and taken together, are the dominant sources of PAHs into the Gulf of Mexico.
