The Douro River watershed drains 17/100 of the Iberian Peninsula; the present average freshwater discharge into the estuary is 488 m~3 s~-1. The Douro River estuary receives largely untreated sewage from about 1 million inhabitants of Greater Porto. A major portion of the intertidal sediments is currently scheduled for removal by dredging. In order to assess their role in nutrient dynamics and productivity, sediment-water fluxes of ammonium, inorganic phoshorus, nitrate, nitrite, silicate and oxygen were determined quarterly in muddy and sandy intertidal sediments of the lower estuary. Fluxes were estimated with both light and dark incubations.
