摘要

For years, academic articles have been published in a similar layout - a format which starts with an abstract and ends with a conclusion and a list of references. Articles were presented in this way for an audience of printed journals. However as most researchers now access articles online, readership styles and how information is gathered have changed quite considerably. In order to enhance the online article, and to adapt to the needs of our community, we are introducing two new features - graphical abstracts and research highlights: A graphical abstract is a concise, pictorial and visual summary of the main findings of the article, which could either be a summarising or concluding figure from the article or a figure that is specially designed for the purpose. A graphical abstract captures the content of the paper for readers at a single glance.
