In a multiple agent system, agents act autonomously on behalf of their own interests. These agents have a high degree of self determination—they decide for themselves under what conditions their actions should be performed (Faratin et al., 1998). In order to come to an agreement for pursuing their goals, these agents need to interact with one another. The paradigm case of interaction is negotiation—a process by which a joint decision is made by two or more agents. When technically building an autonomous agent which is capable of representing a realistic argumentation behavior, three broad areas need to be considered (Mueller, 1996): negotiation protocols, negotiation attributes and a reasoning model of the negotiating agents. This papers sets a special focus on the first area by employing three different negotiation protocols, the one shot, ultimatum and alternating offer and examines the impact of choosing different protocols on the final outcome. In each of these mechanisms, agents deal with multiple attributes including compensation.
