摘要

It is with sadness that the Society reports the death of Erik Kjær on 18th April 2013 after a prolonged serious illness. Born on May 19th 1947, he completed his studies at The Engineering Academy of Denmark in 1972, graduating with a B.Sc. in structural engineering. On finishing his studies, it was not easy to obtain employment in the building industry and he applied for 30 jobs before being employed at the Lime and Brick Laboratory. Established as an industry laboratory for the whole brick and tile industry in 1978, it was approved as a Technological Institute specialising in masonry. In his early years, Erik had the opportunity to be involved in kiln and dryer energy consumption issues in the industry's production plans, this contributing to his ultimate wide knowledge of the technical aspects of the masonry industry. Erik took over leadership of the laboratory in 1985, and in 1991 it merged with other institutes to become the Masonry Centre within the Danish Technology Institute (DTI).
