We have studied on chemical bonding states on polystyrene (PS) films treated by ozone aeration under UV light irradiation (ozone/UV treatment) in distilled water and in an aqueous ammonia solution, and on adsorption behavior of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bovine serum y globulin (BGG) on the treated PS film. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) surface analysis indicates that the ozone/UV treatment induces ring-opening reactions of benzene rings in PS molecules, introducing C-O and C=O bonds on the PS film treated in distilled water and C-O, C-O, and N-H bonds on the film treated in the aqueous ammonia solution. Moreover, the adsorption of BSA having negative surface charge on the treated PS film rapidly increases with an increase in treatment time of the ozone/UV treatment, reaching the maximum in the 2-hour treatment. Despite an increase in treatment time, on the contrary, the adsorption of BGG, of which the surface charge is neutral, is almost constant. From these results, we consider that the ozone/UV treatment is more effective for the BSA adsorption on the PS film.
