A one-dimensional free convection problem models the oxidation and heating of a coal pillar in which air flow, convecting oxygen up a uniform distribution of fractures, is driven by buoyancy arising from heat generated as the oxygen reacts with coal on the fracture surfaces. The heat transport is assumed to be conduction dominated, the fluid flow is modelled as porous medium flow and limiting cases of the non-dimensional fracture surface area are considered. Since buoyancy driven flows are bounded, there is a bound on the rate of supply of oxygen proportational to the permeability and so thermal runaway in the classical sense does not occur.
