This book traces the history of the development of measurement, beginning with trade in ancient times and leading up to the introduction, in 1960, of internationally recognized units of length, mass, time, electric current, temperature, quantity of substance, and luminous intensity. The author notes that, prior to I960, there had been arbitrariness in the choice of basic units of measure and arbitrariness within given measures-for example, 110 separate values for the ell in Europe.
