Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) present a new generation of real-time embedded systems for a wide variety of applications. However, WSNs have limited energy and memory resource. One of the approaches to minimize the energy consumption is to divide the sensor nodes in the network area into clusters and allow only one node in each cluster, called cluster head, to aggregate date from sensor node in cluster and transmit it to Base Station (BS). An efficient method for clustering and appropriate cluster head election can drastically reduce the energy consumption and enhance the lifetime of the network. In the proposed protocol, the sensor nodes were clustered by a modified fuzzy C-means method (modified FCM) to reduce the transmission distance. Then an appropriate cluster head for each cluster is elected based on fuzzy logic system. Three parameters were used for this election process, energy, concentration and centrality. Each cluster head collected data from sensors belonging to its cluster and forwards it to BS. Proactive and reactive data reporting models were used in the proposed protocol. After modeling the proposed energy efficient method for the WSN, LEACH and Gupta protocols are compared with the proposed protocol in even and uneven environments. Simulation results shown that proposed proactive protocol improves the stability period by 55% and 3.9%, respectively as compared with LEACH and Gupta in even environment, and by 58.6% and 6.7%, respectively as compared with LEACH and Gupta in uneven environment. Also the proposed reactive protocol improves the stability period by 134.4% and 83.3%, respectively as compared with LEACH and Gupta in even environment, and by 131.8% and 79.9%, respectively as compared with LEACH and Gupta in uneven environment. Finally, proposed protocol modeling and simulation was done by using MATLAB.
