DELAY ANALYSIS OF ARQ SCHEMES USING STATE TRANSITION DIAGRAMS

Automatic repeat request techniques have been widely used in order to improve throughput and delay performance in digital communication systems. Various methods have also been developed with the aim of modelling and determining performance in communication systems employing these techniques. Some of these methods are complex while others are simplified, In a previous study, the use of simple state transition diagrams and the z-transform were used to determine the throughput of various automatic repeat request schemes. In this paper, that method has been extended to determine data delay in those schemes. It is found that the method does not give simple diagrams like in the determination of throughput. It is however found that among the basic automatic repeat request schemes, the Go-Back-N scheme has the highest delay while the Stutter scheme has the lowest delay. Also, among the mixed mode schemes, the Selective Repeat + Go-Back-N scheme has the highest delay while the Selective Repeat + Stutter scheme has the lowest. It is also shown that the number of retransmissions in the mixed type schemes can be chosen to minimize the delay depending on the noise characteristics of the transmission channel.
