Online hybrid yarns were spun consisting of glass filaments (GF) and filaments of 4 different polymeric matrices, namely polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), polybutyleneterephthalate (PBT) and polylactic acid (PLA). The new processing route by simultaneous spinning of GF and polymer filaments (SpinCom) of different matrix polymers and the high mechanical properties of the resulting unidirectional composites demonstrate the potential of this technology for the manufacturing of secondary and primary structural components. Tailored sizings were applied and the resulting mechanical performance of unidirectional composites was evaluated and compared to commercial products. Especially the influence of tailored interphases onto the bonding between glass fiber and matrix was shown to significantly improve the interphase adhesion strength of the GF/polymer composites.
