In 2011, global production of chemical fibers increased by 3.0 million tons or 5.7 % to 55.2 million tons. Worldwide production of textile fibers increased by 5.0 million tons or 6.3% to 84.2 million tons (Table 1). In total, natural fiber production (cotton, wool, linen, silk) expanded to 29.0 million tons (+7.4%). The global share of chemical fibers of total textile fiber production has been stable at 66% for 3 years.
