The typical high-speed, high-capacity mechanical stamping press has little tolerance for "sensitive" feedback devices. That was the problem facing Pete Walacavage and Jim Black of IDC Corp., Dimon-dale, MI, when they sought to add a shut height readout to IDC's retro-fitable TM-80 press load monitor. They knew they needed a non-con- tact, magnetostrictive transducer to provide the necessary ± 0.001 in. accuracy and 0.0001 in. repeatability across a range of 24 in. to 36 in.
