It goes without saying that Kengo Kuma's favorite material is wood. It appears consistently throughout his portfolio of architectural and design works, from a modeling kit comprisingtriangular LEGO-style cedar building blocks to his lattice facade for a new three-tiered, 80,000-seat National Stadium to mark Tokyo's 2020 Olympics. "I have long felt a deep sense of nostalgia toward traditional materials such as washi, bamboo, and wood that naturally enhance the relaxed atmosphere of a space," the Tokyo-based Japanese architect explains.
