Telepresence is the next generation of video conferencing. Using webcams and the internet with software such as ooVoo, real -time interaction recreates an in-person meeting experience. Telepresence complements current corporate and government goals of "going green" and sustainability. This technology reduces travel costs, increases productivity and promotes a more cohesive work force. Advances in collaborative technology have touched all disciplines. Many applications are successfully used in academics. Professors and librarians collaborate to use video chat for class group work, facilitate office hours, and further communication between the library, faculty and students. At Grand Valley State University this pedagogical tool was used effectively in a business law course for simulated arbitration and mediation contract negotiations. Students meeting in groups did not have to be at the same place to work on their projects. Guest lecturers were brought into class using ooVoo. While affordable and easy to use telepresence requires an understanding of techno-etiquette for effective communication. The librarians prepared a video presentation on video etiquette and tips for a better online presence. This presentation provides examples of several applications of telepresence in a university setting.
