Given the world's renewed, intensified attention to the United States' foreign policy and interventions in the Arab Middle East, and the foundational misconceptions about Arabs among large sectors of American society, there is a growing need for better understandings of often misrepresented and misunderstood Arab American communities. The Jordanian Americans are one of these communities, though mainstream ideas of what makes one "Jordanian American" or, moreover, "Jordanian" are at best problematic. I believe that by thinking about our own neighbors in a more productive and enlightened way (that is, by not lending credence to deeply embedded stereotypes and ethnic archetypes propagated by lazy, racist, biased Western media), we may better understand the places, people, and cultures of Arabs and the Middle East―especially in a global context. This brief article adds to the growing debates on contemporary issues in Arab American identity by illuminating the intricacies and experience of one group, Jordanian Americans, through ethnographic examples. Further, situating these examples in a broader consideration of transnational identity studies allows for the modification and development of theoretical models that help us understand national identity concerns as people around the world continue to be on the move. The present work should not be considered an empirical study as such, thus my arguments rely more heavily on ethnographic and archival research instead of statistical demographics.
