Storicamente, le operazioni militari in aree urbanizzate sono state considerate una pessima idea. Già Sun Tzu affermava che "...la peggior politica è l'attacco alle città ... combatti nelle città solo se non hai alternative" (1). In particolare le operazioni delle unità corazzate nelle aree urbanizzate sono state particolarmente sconsigliate nella dottrina classica delle truppe corazzate. Generazioni di Comandanti di unità motorizzate, meccanizzate e corazzate sono cresciuti con il dogma "evita sempre di entrare nelle città. Lì perdi la maggior parte dei tuoi vantaggi (protezione e potenza di fuoco alle massime distanze). Il nemico può attaccarti da distanze ravvicinate nei punti dove le corazze sono più sottili (parte laterale, superiore e posteriore dei veicoli)" (2). This article aims to an-analyze the main characteristics of military operations in urban environments. In particular, it examines some of the lessons learned from recent operations in urbanized contexts, highlighting, from a combined arms standpoint, both the particular role played by the armoured component and the benefits derived from an integrated use of heavy and light units.
