Today, to speak about national security and the contribution of the Italian Army to the various agencies of the Country re-proposes the paradigm of National Defence (ND) and National Security (NS), and a laborious striving to identify the precise boundary between the two macroareas. Traditionally, and due to the national military culture, we usually connect National Defence with the military capacities of the Armed Forces to carry out typical activities closer to classic war. On the other hand, one tends to see National Security as the operational pillar of the Police Forces and of the other agencies of the Country. The central point of the article resides precisely in the conceptual change between ND and NS, through a doctrinal and operational excursus of the various interventions of the Army for National Security, and an analysis of operation Safe Streets, as archetype of the new types of intervention where, in our opinion, the Italian Army will be able to play a decisive role.%Parlare di sicurezza nazionale oggi e del contributo dell'Esercito Italiano alle diverse agenzie del Paese ripropone il paradigma tra Difesa Nazionale (DN) e Sicurezza Nazionale (SN) e la ricerca affannosa per individuare l'esatto limes tra le due macroaree. Tradizionalmente e per cultura militare nazionale si è abituati a legare la Difesa Nazionale alle capacità militari delle Forze Armate nella condotta di attività tipiche e più vicine alla guerra classica, di contro si è portati a vedere la Sicurezza Nazionale quale pilastro operativo delle Forze di Polizia e delle altre agenzie del Paese. Il punto centrale di questo articolo risiede proprio sul cambiamento concettuale tra DN e SN, attraverso un excursus dottrinale ed operativo dei diversi interventi della Forza Armata per la Sicurezza Nazionale ed un'analisi dell'Operazione Strade Sicure, quale archetipo della nuova tipologia di interventi in cui l'Esercito Italiano potrà, a nostro parere, svolgere un ruolo determinante.
