It would be hard to think of a more critical role on complex battlefields that put enemy combatants, friendly troops and non-combatants in close proximity than that of Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) or any of the kindred roles that centre on putting precision guided weapons on the right target at the right moment while eliminating or minimising collateral damage. JTACs and Forward Air Controllers (FACs) need intimate knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of a wide variety of aircraft and the effects of the weapons they deliver, as well as understanding the ground combat commander's situation and needs and also understanding the terrain from the pilot's point of view. Bearing this in mind, they must be able to describe the target accurately and talk the pilot onto it.
