Functionally, a handgun is nothing more than a delivery system for a bullet, which means that there is good case for selecting the projectile before the gun. While most militaries are limited by the Geneva Convention to Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) ball ammunition, the investment by ammunition manufacturers in other designs that strike an effective balance between penetration - including piercing of intermediate barriers and soft body armour - and the expansion that both maximises energy delivery to the target and reduces the risk of over-penetration is increasing interest in them among militaries.
