The success of the ROK defence industry is starting to parallel how other parts of Korean industry have become global players. In recent years, the ROK defence industry has demonstrated a consistent ability to increase its export sales. In January 2015, the ROK government defence procurement agency, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), announced that defence exports from the ROK amount to a total of U$3.6 billion in 2014, in 2013 official figures showed that ROK defence exports amounted to $3.4 billion. DAPA has stated that in the five years to 2014 ROK defence exports had increased by a total of 31%! According to DAPA the aim for 2015 is that ROK defence exports amount to $4 billion. If this figure is achieved it will be yet another breakthrough by the ROK defence industry, as originally they had targeted achieving $4 billion of annual sales and becoming one of the top seven defence equipment exporting nations by 2020. The ROK defence industry was only established as recently as 1974 with the primary aim of meeting local defence equipment needs and reducing dependency, wherever possible, on foreign suppliers. It was also thought that local license production of foreign equipment and the transfer of technology to allow production in the ROK would be beneficial to the defence industry and have a positive impact on the development of the ROK economy as a whole.
