It is important to distinguish UCAVs from more familiar UAVs originally designed for ISR missions and subsequently equipped with weapons. They are combat aircraft that must go into harm's way to complete their missions with no pilot aboard; as such, represent a very demanding combination of combat aircraft and UAV technologies. Mastering them has absorbed the efforts of the leading western militaries and their industrial partners through a series of technology demonstration efforts, which are beginning to transform into development programmes intended to result in operational capabilities.
