Urban warfare and MOUT have recently received greater attention from defence policy makers concerned with such missions, such as the insurgency faced by occupying forces in Iraq, and Russian forces in Chechnya. Rapid urbanisation will increasingly influence the conduct of joint warfare as well as enhancing security of urban civilian agencies, as by 2030 up to 70% of the world's population is likely to live in cities and megacities - in Asia, Africa and Latin America, with Europe already heavily urbanised.
