Today's Armies are spending large amounts of money for protection of crew and assets, both in terms of increased protection level of the vehicles and active protection for avoiding injury to the crew. However, it is often seen that the crew is driving with an open hatch in critical areas in order to see where they are driving, or, are about to get out of the combat vehicle. Copenhagen Sensor Technology's (CST) statement to this is, "keep your head down and close the hatch, use the camera for driving and situational awareness to protect crew and assets." Creating an effective situational awareness (SA) solution for crew-members in armoured vehicles operating with closed hatches represents a major technological challenge. Modem armoured vehicles are provided with new SA cameras and image processing systems to open a 'virtual window,' enabling crewmembers to view the area around their vehicle, monitoring all movements around them, and respond to suspicious activities that might put them at risk.
