The Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) received two additional AKIZUKI-class destroyers in March 2014, completing the 2007 order for four units. Two ships in the class are already in service. The two additional ships, JS SUZUTSUKI (DD 117) and JS FUYUZUKI (DD 118), have been constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, respectively. The new destroyers carry a 127mm naval gun each, two Type 90 quadruple surface-to-surface missile launchers, a 32-cell Mk41 vertical launch system (VLS) for surface-to-air and anti-submarine missiles plus two HOS-303 triple torpedo tubes. The ships also have two PHALANX 1B automated defence guns each and a large flight deck for a Sikorsky/Mitsubishi Heavy Industries SH-60K ASW helicopter. Their FCS-3A AAW combat system, a fourth-generation Advanced Technology Combat System, consists of two main components: The OPS-50 dual-band and multimode AESA radar and the fire-control system. The FCS-3A is a derivative of the FCS-3 found aboard the HYUGA-class helicopter destroyers, but with a Local Area Defence (LAD) capability. An ESSM SAM VLS will be integrated with the FCS-3A.
