Communications Security (COMSEC) is at the heart of all tactical communications. Which strategies and technologies are available to ensure, protect and transmit military voice and data traffic, lest prying opponents eavesdrop on what is being said and shared between military units, partners or allies? Churchill once said that; "In wartime truth is so precious that she should always be attended to by a bodyguard of lies." In the realm of digital communications, the truth is protected by two dominant forms of COMSEC; frequency-hopping and encryption. Formally known as Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS), this process is fairly self-explanatory in that it utilises a range of frequencies across which a transmission jumps. This process is achieved by taking a radio's carrier wave and moving it across a range of different frequency channels via the process of rapid switching. The rapid switching occurs in a so-called 'pseudorandom' sequence, i.e. the process appears to be random, but in reality is known to the transmitter and receiver. The use of a wide range of different frequencies with a transmission changing rapidly between them makes it extremely difficult for jamming to disrupt the communications.
