Sandy beaches, the blue sea, palms, and of course ... sunshine. That is Corsica. It is the right place to relax, swim and get a tan. But not everybody is here on holiday. In Solenzara, a beautiful town in the north-east of Corsica, there is a French air base equipped with RAFALE combat aircraft. The French Air Force operates these jet fighters as part of the UN-sanctioned Libyan no-fly zone. "Rafale was involved in Libya from Day One", says detachment commander LtCol. Pierre G., whose fighter nickname is Junior. The RAFALE, designed and built by Dassault Aviation, is being produced for both land-based use with the French Air Force and for carrier-based operations with the French Navy. French operational requirements have been set at 286 RAFALE. The Air Force will receive 228 aircraft, while the Navy will operate 58 RAFALE M. Eight of the RAFALEs are located in Solenzara, therefore it is lovingly called RAFALE-town by the French pilots. Currently, the new version of the RAFALE, the Standard F3, is a full omnirole fighter, meaning that a single aircraft is capable of carrying out the full range of missions during a single sortie.
