What appeared to be a mounting debate in the US Army and DoD about what exactly to do with the huge fleet of Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) heavily armoured carrier vehicles, which were procured under a crash programme for use in Iraq but have since been proven unsuitable for use in Afghanistan due to poor off-road mobility, has effectively been terminated before it came to interfere with ongoing procurement efforts.rnUS Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, speaking after a meeting with the Defence Ministers of 44 ISAF partner nations in Brussels, indicated that "the United States will now do whatever we can within the limits of US law, and as soon as we can, to provide as many surplus MRAPs as possible to allies, especially to those operating in high-risk areas".
