Two interesting pictures seem to have emerged from the Indian defence sector in recent times. A spectacular biennial defence exhibition (Def Expo 2010) was organised recently in New Delhi where 650 companies from more than 35 countries participated. Major policy announcements, starting from relaxing the scope of defence offsets to attract more foreign participation, split defence contract awards to encourage Indian companies to boast about India as an attractive destination for arms manufacturers, were announced. Participating companies were visibly impressed by the size of the Indian arms market which could be worth anything between $150 billion to $180 billion in the next decade or so.
