In 2009, the Malaysian government and Armed Forces had a major change of guard. Najib Tun Razak, the long-time Defence Minister, was elevated to the post of Prime Minister, while Ahmad Zahid Ha-midi, who himself served in the MoD for long years under Najib, became the new Defence Minister while Air Force General Tan Sri Azi-zan Ariffin became the Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces.rnThese three critical appointments will significantly impact the priorities and policies of the government towards the Armed Forces. With both the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister having first-hand experience of serving the defence establishment, the requirements of the Armed Forces are expected to receive careful consideration in the corridors of power in Kuala Lumpur.
