As strong as possible, political and military cooperation with the United States is a long-term strategic goal of Poland, which remains exposed to the Russian threat. In order to achieve this goal, the Polish government wants to have US troops deployed on its soil permanently and buy US military hardware, including the PATRIOT anti-ballistic systems or HIMARS MLRS wheeled launchers. Now, Warsaw has signaled its willingness to procure Lockheed Martin F-35A multirole fighters, which are intended to replace the aging MiG-29s and Su-22s. In early September, the US State Department gave the green light, and as soon as Congress agrees, Poland will be able to officially launch its negotiation over a procurement of 32 jets. This was labelled by Polish Defense Minister, Mariusz Btaszczak, as "the most important contract for the Polish Armed Forces in their history."
