Hyperbole has become endemic to the 'global marketing speak' that has become the norm in 21st century commerce. The defence and aerospace domains are no exception to this rule. Almost all technologies are 'cutting edge,' new systems provide 'unparalleled capability' and the number of different versions of reality - virtual, augmented and mixed, to name just three - seems to expand every year. Are these symptoms of a new way of doing business - what we might call 'commercial reality' - or do these issues lie like a fresh and different veneer over an existing, largely unchanged carcass (to use a furniture term)? As l/ITSEC 2019 prepares to open its doors in the Orange County Convention Centre in Orlando, MT takes a quick look at evidence for both assertions. Is the defence training and simulation (T&S) industry in forward motion or in meltdown: transformation or transition?
