A look at why the Republic of Singapore's Navy is a world-class, networked, three-dimensional navy; arguably, deploying the most modern warships and submarines in the region.Looking to the future, the the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) anticipates growing use of automation as Singapore's demographics predict growing shortfalls of appropriately aged citizens to satisfy military requirements.Ranked among the top naval forces in the Pacific, the RSN is well-balanced, with a mix of ship types and capabilities. Six FORMIDABLE-class frigates, based on Naval Group's LA FAYETTE-class, with some major differences, provide anti-air, surface, and anti-submarine combat capability. Up to two Sikorsky (a Lockheed Martin company) S-70B helicopters may be carried. A squadron of six VICTORY-class corvettes, most in service since the early 1990s, underwent upgrades including an operational capability for the Insitu ScanEagle UAS. During a fleet exercise in March 2016, VICTORIA-class missile corvette RSS VIGOUR successfully test-fired a BARAK anti-missile missile. The FORMIDABLE- and VICTORY-class are armed with Boeing HARPOON anti-ship missiles and Leonardo 76/62 Super RAPID guns.
