During the COVID19 crisis, the debate over the degree of independent control a state should have over strategic value and supply chains has heated up. The unprecedented magnitude of the crisis overstretched global supply chains, especially those from and to China, where some of the items in highest demand are produced. Nations highly integrated into the international economy realised that, when their own populations were threatened, they had to act alone, trying to secure the necessary resources more effectively and faster than their competitors. The most surprising aspect is how late in the game some European governments recognise the relationship between resources and national security.
