The return of regional tensions in several areas of the world, and the infinite nuances brought about by hybrid warfare, are fostering a demand for short- and medium-range air defence missile systems. Recent crises in Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Nagorno-Karabakh have again confirmed that today's conflicts are sudden and multifaceted. Armies will go to war as they are, with little or no possibility of mobilising forces. Enemy forces are likely to attack simultaneously from multiple directions, to overstretch defending forces. Ground-based air defence (GBAD) batteries will have to respond to multiple attacks from multiple directions. Yet their employment doctrine has changed over time. Today, air defence batteries are often assigned the objective of maintaining the confidence of the local populace that they will be defended, that cities will not see 'little green men' hanging around and that friends and foes will remain clearly identifiable at any point. The best-of-breed GBAD system will be the one that can be rapidly deployed and can assure full command of the country for decision-makers, as they deal with complex scenarios. GBAD systems will be a key component in denying easy access to territory. The more armed forces are resilient, the more politicians will be able to put in place an effective strategy and, eventually, to internationalise the crisis, creating a favourable stalemate. In this, GBAD batteries must be resilient, operational at any time of year and anywhere in the country, in all weather conditions. GBAD batteries are with holding and being operational for as long as possible - in terms of maintenance, resupply, resistance to losses, etc. This stresses the supply chain and the system's technological superiority over the enemy's assets: all of which is in addition to the traditional force protection role. Hence, countries interested in building (or rebuilding) their short- and medium-range air defences typically have four main requirements: greater range in comparison to legacy systems; capability against cruise missiles; an area/territorial defence capability; and relative independence in maintenance. On the supply side, there are a few notable examples that already take these requirements into account, promising cutting-edge solutions.
