In a little over 40 years, China has advanced from being an ideologically-driven dystopia to being the largest economy in the world. China truly has become a great power, in the classic sense of the phrase, and achieving this in such a short timeframe is an incredible accomplishment. However, China feels that the current international system does not reflect its status as a great power - nor its ambitions. One of the tools through which China hopes to modify the international system lies in the use of maritime power, in the shape of the growing capabilities of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).
