As we bade farewell to the equipment-filled halls of London's ExCeL Centre two years ago, at the end of an event-filled, hectic (did we mention exhausting) week, little did we imagine the travails that would beset our community - indeed, our wider communities, as in nations - before the next time we reconvened to celebrate (if that is the right word) the 'event of events' that DSEI has become. The changes wrought in society have been quite far-reaching - and the reverberations and consequences will be felt far beyond the bounds of this calendar year. There are strong indications that some of those consequences may become permanent - a massive uptick in the incidence of online conferencing, for example - and what might be the long-term effects of that on office-centric work, commuting, the hospitality industry servicing large corporate centres.... the list goes on. There are negatives in every direction, and quite a lot of positives too. But - returning to the theme of DSEI and why/how/whether it will be any more important in 2021 than it was in 2019 - the answer is yes. And no.
