With the exception of some individual private vanity memoirs, military biographies tend to be of well-known leaders. This, in turn, emphasizes the big picture, major battles and sweeping campaigns. This is unfortunate, as war is actually fought by warriors at the cutting edge — the one who sweats, freezes, bleeds and dies. Too many visualize combat as a chessboard with inanimate figures.
