Last autumn, following months of low milk prices and protests by dairy farmers, the outgoing EU farm commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel set up a high level group tasked to come up with answers to dairy's medium and long-term strategy with an eye firmly on the abolition of milk quotas post-2015.rnShe also brought into play support measures designed to protect farmers against the worst ravages of low prices and these measures, according to current agriculture commissioner Dacian Ciolos have proved vital.rn"Most of the tools we have to intervene havernbeen put to work in recent months. They have helped reverse the decline in prices that reached their lowest level almost a year ago," he said.
