For decades, UK dairy co-operatives have looked over their shoulders in envy at business models in Europe, North America and New Zealand. While trading nominally as co-ops, they have often been faced bya number of challenges that prevented them reaching their full potential. Deregulation just over a decade ago didn't help the co-op cause and since then the shape of the dairy sector has changed massively. This has brought greater consolidation - with many pundits forecasting more of the same - the structure of supermarkets that has recently triggered yet another inquiry into their operating practices.
