In the case of America, manufacturers are deluding themselves that because they share a common language the sales job will be easier. And as far as France is concerned, it is because they do not speak French and because in the past so much poor quality Cheddar has been sent across the English Channel. Mr Smith demolished the idea of easy pickings across the Atlantic by pointing to tight US import quotas. "To say it is an easy market is nonsense for a number of reasons. One, you've got import quotas of 15,000 tonnes; second, the market in the States is for very low quality, low maturity product; and third, they look to America because they speak English. It is a very parochial view. "You only need to look across the North Sea and there you have any number of countries where they eat hard cheese, sliced for breakfast. So why go all the way across the Atlantic? The reason is because they speak English. It's a very poor marketing rationale.
