The directories at the entrances of academic buildings, which once listed only departments, faculty and administrators have taken on an institutional cast. The political science listings at one American university include centres for the Study of state and local politics, conflict resolution and development studies. Interdisciplinary centres are also expanding resolution and scope; the Center For Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology draws its 120 members from 12 departments.
